Building on its “Curriculum interculturALE” project, DVV International is developing a further training course for instructors at adult education centres working with refugees who are interested in returning home.

Since 2018, DVV International has been implementing intercultural-didactical training course for instructors at adult education centres who work with refugees in the field of integration. This training course developed in the project “Curriculum interculturALE” is taught in three modules and shows how to create a trusting and respectful learning atmosphere through greater reflection on one’s own actions and the use of participatory teaching methods. In addition, it takes a close look at the diverse stories, learning habits and needs of the refugees.

In 2019, DVV International will expand this training concept and adapt it for the target group of instructors of the DVV project “Building bridges with education – further training for returnees”. As part of the model project, the German Adult Education Association is developing further training courses for refugees interested in returning voluntarily to their home countries.

These 4-week further training courses offered by adult education centres (on topics such as crafts, IT, beauty, start-up, etc.) are intended to support the social and professional reintegration of the participants, strengthen them personally and help them to develop new perspectives for themselves and their families after returning home. Through the existing (partner) structures of DVV International, those returning home are to be referred to counselling and further education institutions in their home countries in order to continue their further education and promote their employability.

In order to develop the training for instructors, DVV International has assembled a team of international experts to bring together knowledge and methods from working with refugees and returnees from various countries such as Jordan, Palestine, Turkey and Germany. In the coming months, the team will develop a training concept tailored to the topic “Educational work with refugees interested in returning home”, as well as related teaching and learning materials.

The further training will then be offered in autumn 2019 at three vhs model locations for instructors of the project “Building bridges with education”. In this manner for the instructors a special space will be created in which they can reflect on their own role and cultural imprint. In addition, they should also be provided with methods that enable them to design their lessons in a participative, integrative and appreciative manner and to respond to the individual needs of the participants, and to the social challenges associated with their return home.

The model project “Building bridges with education – further training for returnees” is funded by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) on behalf of the BMZ (German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development).
